Jin Feibao (金飞豹) - Feibao has climbed the highest mountain in every continent, skied to the North and South Pole, crossed the Sahara and Taklamakan Deserts, traversed across Greenland, cycled through SE Asia, ran “extreme” marathons in every continent, and collected the world’s largest Olympic stamp collection, all within the last 10 years. On the agenda this year is our cycle trip across the US and continuing his event of completing 100 marathons in his life. How can one man do so many things? “It’s easy,” Feibao explains. “All that you have to do is dream.” Since a young boy Feibao has always been a dreamer. His inspiration comes from books like Jules Verne’s Around the World in 80 Days andTwenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, which he read as a child and he always knew he was going to be an explorer. “Realizing your dream is the hard part, the rest is just finding other people that share your dream to fund it for you!”
Fei Xuan (费宣) - Fei Xuan is a senior geological expert, director of the Geological Society of China, member of Yunnan Committee of CPPCC, and Vice Chairman of Yunnan Geological Society. During 1993 and 1994, he directly lead and participated in China’s pioneering in gold mines in West Australia. The gold mines were the first Chinese gold mines in Australia. In June 2008, he and Jin Fei Bao became the first Chinese team to cross Greenland in the event “Trekking through the Greenland Glacier from West to East.” In April through June of 2009, Fei Xuan successfully completed valuable research on global desertification while he accompanied Jin Fei Bao on his trek across the Sahara Desert. In 2014, he became the oldest Chinese person to reach the North Pole by foot. Even after retirement, Fei Xuan has continued his passion for geological research, through exploration and life improvement. He has recently published multiple books in Chinese and German on his expedition through Greenland and geology in Yunnan.
Norbert Hans Kern – The Adventurer from Germany, Norbert was attracted to this event to be with his fellow explorers and great friends, Jin Feibao and Fei Xuan as well as to support the trips main objectives of cultural exchange and adventure. Norbert has loved cycling ever since he was a young boy. At 14 he cycled many short tours with his friends and when he was 18, Norbert cycled through the Alps from Frankfurt all the way down the Italian Peninsula to the island of Sicily and back! His latest adventures have included trekking to the South Pole in January, 2007 and the North Pole in April of the same year. This is when he first met Jin Feibao. The following year he accompanied Feibao on his trek across the Greenland Glacier from west to east and became great friends with Fei Xuan. Together, Fei Xuan and Norbert later published The White Spot, a book on their trek across the glacier in Chinese and German based on their diaries written in their cold tents. At the age of 71, Norbert reached the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa.
Besides being an avid adventurer, Norbert is also a very successful business man. He was the CEO of the freight sections of Germany's national railroad company (DB – Cargo AG) before he was the owner of an international air and ocean freight forwarder company which was based in Germany, Hong Kong, Taipei, Korea, Philippines and South Africa and had more than 600 employees. Norbert will turn 75 while on the bicycle this year on July 26th.
Jin Feibiao (金飞彪) - A senior expert on outdoor sports and sports products, the pioneer of Yunnan outdoor products and outdoor sports, and the general manager of XueFeng Outdoor Sports Products, Jin Feibiao reached the summit of Everest with is brother, Jin Feibao, on May 14, 2006. He has also summitted Jiao Zi Snow Mountain (4217 meters), Mt. Muztahgata in Xin Jiang Province (7546 meters), Mt. Qowowuyag in Tibet (8201 meters), and Mt. Xixabangma in Tibet (8020 meters).
Yang Haidong (杨海冬) - Born in 1976, Yang Haidong has lived his entire life in Kunming. In 1995, he graduated from Yunnan University majoring in Chinese and Journalism. Since then, he has worked in hotel marketing and for a short time in 1997 he also worked as a tour guide for Jin Fei Bao’s travel agency, Top Trip. Soon after he began to work for The Kunming City Times (都市时报) as a reporter and photographer. Haidong quickly became known for his exceptional ability to capture the true faces of Kunming as well as report them in a comical, down-to-earth fashion. In 2006, Haidong accompanied Mr. Jin Fei Bao and successfully summitted the highest mountain in Africa, Mt. Kilimanjaro (5895m), while reporting back to Kunming with unforgettable stories and photos. Haidong is one of the few people at the City Times who cycles to work, 30km everyday. His co-workers have begun to call him Lance Armstrong because while cycling he precariously always seems to wear yellow!
Jesse Millett - Jesse has had quite an eclectic history in China, and particularly Yunnan, as well as many years of experience cycling in both the mountains and on the roads. Jesse’s history in Yunnan began in 2004. With a lead from his uncle, Gregg Millett, he participated in an exhibition, organized by Mr. Jin Fei Bao, of his grandfather’s photographs, the earliest known color photographs taken in China, 1944. This trip not only sparked his fascination with China and Yunnan, but also a long lasting friendship with Fei Bao. Jesse has returned to China, frequently over the past ten years to study, work and live, and now considers Kunming as his home away from home.
Jesse began bicycling from an early age, and by the time he was 13 he was already competing in weekly mountain bike races. His hobby turned into a job in 2008, when he worked for TeenTreks, a bicycle touring company that leads high school students on self-sustaining treks for weeks on end throughout the US, Canada, and Europe. Some of Jesse’s favorite hobbies include traveling, snowboarding, playing soccer, and mountain biking. Jesse now lives in Kunming, Yunnan instructing experiential learning programs for Where There Be Dragons. He is very honored to have the chance to represent the wonderful people of Yunnan, China.
Dr. Li Pengfei – A 39 year old native of Jianchuan, Yunnan, Dr. Li Pengfei is an attending physician at the Yunnan Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine and will be the team doctor. Dr. Li graduated from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine in 2001, majoring in traumatology and orthopedics of traditional Chinese medicine.
Dr. Li is also a trekking and cycling enthusiast. In 2002 he trekked through the magnificent Tiger Leaping Gorge in Lijiang, Yunnan; 2005 he trekked through the Dulong River valley in Gongshan, Yunnan; 2009 he trekked the Yubeng Nilong curcuit of Meili Snow Mountain in Shangri-la, Yunnan; and in 2014 he trekked to Mount Kailash in Tibet. To set him apart, between the years of 2006 and 2012, he biked and trekked to trace the steps of Joseph Rock, the American National Geographic reporter who was in Yunnan from 1922-1949.
Some of his other hobbies include reading traditional Chinese medicine texts and history books as well as Chinese tea and food cultures. He strongly believes in environmentally friendly travel and uses his bike for transportation frequently in Kunming. His dream is to write a novel and his life motto is “On our journey, body and mind must be one.”
