Hello Everybody!
I am organizing a cross country bicycle ride with my Chinese friends, and famous explorers, Jin Feibao and Fei Xuan (who also cycled with me in Southeast Asia), starting in Boston and ending in San Francisco this summer. The title of our trip is “Exploring America's Diversity: a cross-country cycle tour of America's subcultures.” Our itinerary is still quite flexible, but we plan on taking a direct route, spending about 60 days, covering 3500 miles, and crossing 14 states, including Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado (southern), Utah, Arizona (northern), New Mexico (northern), Nevada, and California.
As the title of our trip suggests, we plan on visiting as many subcultures of America as possible along the way, and where possible stay with locals to get the best American experience possible. Some examples of people and places we would like to visit or stay: colleges, farms, Amish, Native American reservations, Mormons, Quakers, Evangelists, anarchists, activists Chinese Americans, African Americans, Shaker, etc.
If you have any suggestions for us, or know of anyone who would like to host us, please contact me. You don't have to categorize yourself as any subculture, you just have to be willing to put up with three stinky men! As of right now our trip is planned for this summer, July/August of 2013. As with our last trip across SE Asia, it will most likely be highly publicized in China and we welcome any publicity in the US as well.

Sounds like an awesome trip and some great company! I strongly encourage you to stop in St. George, Utah and experience the profound Mormon culture. Founded on LDS principles, this town is conveniently located near Bryce and Zion National Park, which are natural wonders that should not be missed. Even more interesting than St. George is Colorado City. Predominantly inhabited by Fundamentalist Mormons practicing "celestial marriage," Colorado City is an outlier among outliers. It'll be a great place to see the America our high school history teachers forgot to teach about. As Backroads trip leader in the SW region and as a biker with experience going from DC to SF and winter plans to bike from Chengdu to Singapore, feel free to contact me.
